From insights to impact

Our journey in mental health advocacy began with research and has culminated in tangible tools for change. This page reflects on our growth and the strategic power of communication in fostering a supportive community.

The power of strategic communication

Our journey from student researcher to campus advocate has been transformative. We've learned that understanding data is just the first step; the true power lies in applying rhetorical tools and strategic communication to solve real-world problems. This project goes beyond a mere report, demonstrating how branding and multi-platform outreach can effectively address mental health stigma.

Building a toolkit for community action

Recognizing mental health as a shared community responsibility, we've developed a functional toolkit designed for action. This isn't just about raising awareness; it's about providing the means to lead a campaign that turns awareness into tangible support. The "culture of silence" can be overcome with these tools, fostering open conversations and reducing isolation.

Empowering action, inspiring hope

After exploring our journey from data to advocacy, we want you to feel empowered and motivated to make a difference. While the research reveals serious struggles, this conclusion offers a sense of hope: the "culture of silence" can be fixed with tangible tools we can use together. See how change is possible and feel a clear drive to engage.

Your role in breaking the silence

We invite you to transition from passive reader to active participant. Download and share our campaign materials. Advocacy isn't always about grand speeches; it's about the small, intentional act of placing a flyer or sharing a post to show a peer they aren't alone. You now hold the tools to help break the silence, moving you to spark at least one conversation about mental health today.

What I Learned

Through this project, I realized that mental health on the UMSL campus isn't just a personal issue; it is a community one. My research showed a clear "culture of silence" where students often feel they have to handle their stress alone to succeed academically. By creating this website, I learned how to turn raw data and survey results into a visual campaign that speaks directly to my peers.

The Power of Advocacy

The most important thing I discovered is that advocacy doesn't have to be complicated. Sometimes, it is as simple as providing a clear phone number or a validating message on a flyer. Moving from a researcher to an advocate forced me to think about "rhetorical strategy"—choosing the right colors, the right tone, and the right platforms (like Instagram and campus flyers) to make sure the message actually reaches the people who need it most.

Moving Forward

My goal for Matters of the Mind was to bridge the gap between struggling in silence and finding support. I hope that by providing this toolkit, I've made it a little bit easier for the next student to reach out for help. This project has taught me that when we break the silence, we create a stronger, healthier UMSL.
